Effects of unemployment
Unemployment is a very important aspect that affects all people affected. The effect is the loss of income of individuals, families, and the community at large. In some areas of the world, unemployment has become almost a stigma, but unemployment cannot be called any other label. Unemployment is caused not by factors beyond people’s control, such as the economy, but by its appearance. When people are either not available or not employed, many people and their families suffer as a result. People will cut down on many of their expenses just to bring in extra income. This sudden increase in expenses causes those affected to take on debt or borrow money to pay back the debts. When an individual is out of work, he/she will not be able to take up more jobs in the future, which poses additional costs.
According to Pew Research Center for People and Press, more than 13 percent of U.S. adults are unemployed right now. Unemployment is much higher in African-American communities, with over 20 percent, many of those community members are more likely to be young people. The economic system of a community can lead to high unemployment since most positions in retail stores and factories have been replaced by machines. Jobs that did not exist previously are hard to find, as the technology and skills that are considered obsolete are completely replaced by new technology. An unstable political system, as well as cuts in government stimulus, can increase economic suffering. Without stimulus money from the government, most Americans will not be able to obtain jobs and will not be able to afford their basic needs. While unemployment might not seem like a major problem on a local scale, it is caused by much larger problems and many different factors that are beyond people’s control.
As a result of unemployment, families will suffer financial issues. When an individual loses his/her job, this can lead to other adverse consequences for the family. For example, if the family stays at home while the individual works, they will have to house other people. Although staying home can have its perks, such as time with the children, the responsibility of helping to take care of the household can lead to burdensome tasks. Due to many factors, lack of employment can be very stressful. People will avoid their children in favor of working because they do not have to deal with home life. If an individual will not be able to work and will have little or no income, the option to go to work has become unsafe for them. If an individual refuses to take a position that puts their health at risk, they will no longer have the means to take care of their own children. The mental toll of living without income is high, and people will seek other avenues to find the money. These means are way beyond just applying for and being hired. Potential business owners will turn away job applications because of the high costs of living in urban communities, while many individuals will try to find work for which they are not qualified. For example, as the population grows, demand for jobs also increases. Employers will have to raise their salaries and provide better conditions for the individuals they work with.
Unemployment is caused by many different factors, and due to the current economic state of many regions in the world, there is little, if any, attempt to raise levels of unemployment. People who want to work must go without food, water, shelter, and more. Inequality can be created by companies that provide a hazardous work environment to those working at night or in hot and humid weather, but this is unjust and also inhumane. Some companies use their employees like cashiers, not their primary employees. Without a steady income, many individuals and families will be pushed into poverty. In many areas of the world, unemployment can have serious effects on the environment. For example, if the amount of natural resources goes up, the result will be pollution from factories and other urban areas. Workers do not have enough money to purchase the materials they need to work, and they fall into foreclosure. While cities become polluted, cities continue with their production of goods and waste. Urbanization is increasing. Corporations will begin to pollute the natural environment and this will take a massive toll on the ecosystems and habitats of the surrounding communities. A study by the Natural Resources Defense Council, a non-profit environmental group, found that 400 million trees would be planted over the course of the next 10 years if employers would pay workers fair wages. More money would increase consumerism as well as deforestation, and higher prices for energy and other resources. Workers would gain the benefit of not only making more money but having more money available for the supplies needed to manufacture products.
